Case Study – the Wilde Ones

How a logo was born.

The Background

The idea for ‘The Wilde Ones’ came from Melissa’s love of working with fabric and her desire to turn, what was essentially a hobby, into a home based business. The idea to develop a bespoke clothing line came from Melissa having a young son, who hadn’t yet reached his first birthday. She found the lack of funky clothing for boys frustrating and so set about making her own. The feedback Melissa got from her Facebook community was so encouraging that she began to take orders, and on the back of this, developed her own ‘memory doll’ – the idea here being to create a soft doll out of babies clothing so that the memories are maintained over time, and they form a tangible, interactive toy which a child can enjoy and one which can become a family heirloom. Melissa has also now extended her clothing range to include funky clothing for baby girls

The Challenge

Melissa set up her business from nothing. With no seed funding.

The Objectives

Melissa wanted her business to have an image which reflected her ‘alternative’ nature and the fact that her market would share her desire for bespoke and alternative designs and patterns. From discussions with Melissa, I asked her to provide me with a sense of what she wanted and what inspired her in terms of fabric swatches, images and logos she may have seen which appealed to her. From this I produced an Ideas Board which you can see opposite.

The Solution

Having spoken to Melissa at length about her business aims, what she wanted to project as a business and the type of customer base she wanted to attract, I was able to produce a first draft design. See image on the left.

From feedback provided by Melissa, I was able to extend the uniqueness of her logo by incorporating original art into the design.

Melissa’s final image is unique and incorporates hand drawn original art as well as an image of her little boy which obviously has a deep meaning for her.

The Outcome

From our initial discussion, the Ideas Board and the creation of a 1st draft design, Melissa was provided with the assets shown on the image below.

Her business got a unique logo, two label graphics and an accent image. All can be used separately or combined depending on her needs.

For example, Melissa could use the logo graphic on all her printed business stationery (invoices, letter head, business cards etc).

The Accent image could be used on delivery labels etc., and it ties in with and relates back to the logo, and the text-based graphics will work perfectly when she progresses to personalised sew in fabric labels. This isn’t something that Melissa is doing at the moment, but including them in the design means that she has some future proofing for her business as she expands.i

Melissa's Feedback

“As a new business with virtually no start up funding I can’t believe how many graphics Carolyn Hammond Art was able to produce for me in such a short time scale from what was a broad brief.

The fact that original art has been built into the design, together with the inclusion of my new baby as the base image is so special to me. I cannot recommend Carolyn Hammond highly enough. From a brief conversation she intuitively created an image which was perfect!”

"Adding value, over and above expectations is what excites us!"

"It was a pleasure helping Melissa with the development of a brand image for her handmade business and it was particularly satisfying to find a way for her son, Ariko, to be the star of the show. After all he was the inspiration for her business."
